Forty years later, Jenny Messner’s year studying abroad with AFS-USA still shapes her life in ways she never could have imagined. Fluent in Portuguese, with a successful career in international banking behind her, she now helps local teenagers, like she once was, have the same opportunity to have a life-changing AFS experience abroad.
The mid section of Pennsylvania has an amazing history and special opportunities for students, families, schools and communities interested in a more just and peaceful world through international and intercultural exchange opportunities. Since 1995, Susquehanna Valley AFS has sent more than 60 students to 23 countries, and Susquehanna Valley AFS families have hosted more than 80 students from 27 countries since 2007, plus many more in the years prior.
By offering exchange programs that are built around four key educational goals, AFS has given more than 400,000 individuals the tools to grow into responsible global citizens. These goals serve as the backbone for AFS programs, and help participants develop the knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed in an increasingly globalized workforce.
